#ThoughtfulThursday Week 5: Mothers

I’m sure you all know that Mother’s Day will soon be upon us once more. This year my Mother’s Day will be different than it has been in the past because now I’m also a mother.

I’m celebrating being a mother. I’m celebrating all the wonderful things my mother has done for me and my family. I’m celebrating the way my mother-in-law raised my husband, because without him I don’t think I would be the kind of mother that I am. I’m celebrating having two loving grandmothers who were around to help instill their values in me and that they are still here to love on my little girl.

Today we celebrate mothers.

I decided to share some quotes about mothers a little before Mother’s Day so that all you crafty, Pinteresting people out there that might want a nice quote for a project still have plenty of time before the big day is here!

So, without further ado…

Mother - Agatha ChristieI love this quote.

There really is nothing like the love of a mother for her children. I can attest to this sentiment, there is truly nothing I would not do for my daughter.

She is my motivation.

Mother - Tina FeyTruer words were never spoken.

Never in my life have I been as happy as I have been the last 18 months of my life. (Through pregnancy and now 9 months with our Dragonling. ) However, I cannot remember a time I was this tired…

Seriously, not even in college.

Mother -Gyllenhaal Being a mom is hard.

It’s the hardest job I’ve ever had.

Why are there so many mothers criticizing other mothers? Why aren’t we more supportive of other women in the same shoes as we? What do we think we’re going to accomplish by putting down someone else who probably just needs a little support?

Next time you see a mother out with her kids and struggling in some way be supportive. Tell her she’s doing a good job.

Don’t tell her how you would handle it if they were your kids.
Don’t tell her what she should be doing differently.
Don’t make a stressful situation more stressful.

Just let her know that you believe in her.

Mother - WildeI couldn’t have said it better myself.

mathlovinmama-1Motherhood is the great equalizer.

It doesn’t matter where a child is from, what they’ve been through in their life, or if you agree with the lifestyle they’ve been raised with… When a child is hurting, every mother hurts. When a child is in need, every mother wants to fulfill that need. When a child is in danger, every mother wants to bring them to safety.

Mothers are one of the most precious commodities our world has to offer. We should appreciate them more often.

This week I found my quotes using the Mother’s Day quote finder from ProFlowers. The quote finder features 80 quotes from famous people about mothers. It was really hard to pick the best ones, and obviously I couldn’t put all 80 in this post so you should definitely go check it out for yourself! It might just have the perfect line for inside your Mother’s Day card. (And send Mom some flowers while you’re there. 😉 )

What are you celebrating this Mother’s Day? I’d love to hear some of your favorite memories of you mothers!

Verse of the Day: April 30, 2015

At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children.”
-Matthew 11:35

Verse of the Day: April 29, 2015

Rejoice and be glad,
for your reward is great in heaven,
for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Matthew 5:12

Getting My Body Back: End Month One

**This post contains affiliate links.

Some of you probably remember back at the beginning of April when I posted about how I wanted to get my body back so that I felt healthy and in control again. Then you may have noticed I seemed to, more or less, drop off the face of the Earth.

It has been a crazy month!

I was sick for a couple weeks, there was a big road trip with an interview, I started promoting my new business adventure more heavily, I worked on homework for my master’s classes, and tried to keep up with a little bit of blogging; all while attempting to keep up with the day to day activities that have to get done.

Needless to say, I kind of fell off the wagon.

Now I’m feeling pretty good again, and, even though life hasn’t slowed down, I’m ready to get back to it! Yesterday, I decided to jump start this reboot by doing a DVD work out.

The work out DVD I chose was Air Bar Exercises Volume 1. It is very different than any other DVD workout I have ever done, and if you can get past the less than stellar videography, intermittent microphone issues, and the stream of consciousness babbling from the woman leading the exercises it is an excellent work out!

I like it because it’s different. It’s like a weird cross between an intense boot camp  workout and a soothing yoga class. None of the movements are all that difficult by themselves and it can be tailored to any fitness level.

If this overweight, nine month postpartum, hasn’t-exercised-regularly-in-five-years Momma can do it so can you!

The only tool you need for the work out is a 3 foot long wooden dowel, easily attained at any craft or hardware store for a couple bucks. Or, if you don’t have one on hand and want to do the work out anyway, do like I did and grab your broom, detach the bristle head, and get to work!

I could feel the results almost immediately. My arm muscles, leg muscles, and back muscles all felt tired and a little sore starting about 30 minutes after I finished.

As with any work out, I followed up by drinking a few glasses of water and making sure to stretch out my muscles. Today I’m hoping to get in another work out, probably shorter and less intense, but if I don’t keep it up I’ll never see any progress!

As I go through this journey to get my body back I hope to share more of my work outs, some recipes, and inspiration with you. I hope you’ll come back and see what I have in store!

Do you have any favorite DVD work outs? Please tell me about them in the comments. I’d love to hear about them, maybe I’ll find a new one to add to my stash!

The Fourteenth Goldfish was first published in 2014 and immediately made it onto blogs and even the Global Read Aloud. It’s about Ellie. Her parents are divorced but cordial and her biggest concern is starting middle school. Then one day, her mother brings home a boy. He’s a moody teenager…but something about him is very familiar to Ellie. He’s a lot like her crazy grandpa/scientist. Could it be? Some themes to consider while reading this book: science ethics, science, divorce, friendship, aging, family, inter-generational relationships, growth mindset, and stereotypes. Enjoy!!

Verse of the Day: April 28, 2015

The tree grew and became strong,
and its top reached to heaven,
and it was visible to the end of the whole earth.
Its leaves were beautiful and its fruit abundant,
and in it was food for all.
The beasts of the field found shade under it,
and the birds of the heavens lived in its branches,
and all flesh was fed from it.

Daniel 4:11-12

Book Review: Wisdom and Peace of the Teachings of the Tao Te Ching

wisdom + peace of tao te ching

It has been a long time since I have read any philosophical books of any kind. I do, however, have fond memories of the time I spent reading about Asian philosophies when I was in college, so I was very excited to have the opportunity to review The Wisdom and Peace of the Teachings of the Tao Te Ching by Matthew S. Barnes. This book is a simple, modern interpretation of the Tao Te Ching written by Lao Tzu around 400 BC.

As someone who has also read the Lao Tzu’s work, I was impressed by the way Barnes was able to modernize the language and still keep the original spirit and feel of the original. I love that his interpretation makes the teachings of the Tao Te Ching more available to the casual reader. The work of deciphering the meaning behind Lao Tzu’s wording is done for you. While I loved taking the time to decode and understand the original writings I can see how many people would not enjoy that part of reading the original.

Some of the main themes of the book include:

  • What is in control of everything (Newsflash: It’s not you or me. Or your boss. Or any other physical being.)
  • Finding your home and keeping it with you all the time
  • How to handle life’s crazy situations and unexpected events in a calm, respectful manner
  • How to find your inner strength and help it endure through life’s challenges

I know some of my readers are quite religious and may be a little put off by many of the ideas in Asian philosophy because they don’t center around the Christian God but rather an  unseen force that impacts our lives. As a Christian myself I would urge you to look at this book, and any other books on the topic, as a manual for a happy, healthy life rather than as something that goes against your Christian beliefs. I truly think that the beliefs and spirit of this book fits perfectly into the Christian lifestyle.

If you think this sounds like a book you might be interested in, you can purchase it at Amazon in either Kindle or paperback.

Because you are precious in my eyes,
and honored, and I love you,
I give men in return for you, peoples in exchange for your life.
