#ThoughtfulThursday Week 5: Mothers

I’m sure you all know that Mother’s Day will soon be upon us once more. This year my Mother’s Day will be different than it has been in the past because now I’m also a mother.

I’m celebrating being a mother. I’m celebrating all the wonderful things my mother has done for me and my family. I’m celebrating the way my mother-in-law raised my husband, because without him I don’t think I would be the kind of mother that I am. I’m celebrating having two loving grandmothers who were around to help instill their values in me and that they are still here to love on my little girl.

Today we celebrate mothers.

I decided to share some quotes about mothers a little before Mother’s Day so that all you crafty, Pinteresting people out there that might want a nice quote for a project still have plenty of time before the big day is here!

So, without further ado…

Mother - Agatha ChristieI love this quote.

There really is nothing like the love of a mother for her children. I can attest to this sentiment, there is truly nothing I would not do for my daughter.

She is my motivation.

Mother - Tina FeyTruer words were never spoken.

Never in my life have I been as happy as I have been the last 18 months of my life. (Through pregnancy and now 9 months with our Dragonling. ) However, I cannot remember a time I was this tired…

Seriously, not even in college.

Mother -Gyllenhaal Being a mom is hard.

It’s the hardest job I’ve ever had.

Why are there so many mothers criticizing other mothers? Why aren’t we more supportive of other women in the same shoes as we? What do we think we’re going to accomplish by putting down someone else who probably just needs a little support?

Next time you see a mother out with her kids and struggling in some way be supportive. Tell her she’s doing a good job.

Don’t tell her how you would handle it if they were your kids.
Don’t tell her what she should be doing differently.
Don’t make a stressful situation more stressful.

Just let her know that you believe in her.

Mother - WildeI couldn’t have said it better myself.

mathlovinmama-1Motherhood is the great equalizer.

It doesn’t matter where a child is from, what they’ve been through in their life, or if you agree with the lifestyle they’ve been raised with… When a child is hurting, every mother hurts. When a child is in need, every mother wants to fulfill that need. When a child is in danger, every mother wants to bring them to safety.

Mothers are one of the most precious commodities our world has to offer. We should appreciate them more often.

This week I found my quotes using the Mother’s Day quote finder from ProFlowers. The quote finder features 80 quotes from famous people about mothers. It was really hard to pick the best ones, and obviously I couldn’t put all 80 in this post so you should definitely go check it out for yourself! It might just have the perfect line for inside your Mother’s Day card. (And send Mom some flowers while you’re there. 😉 )

What are you celebrating this Mother’s Day? I’d love to hear some of your favorite memories of you mothers!

MKnits4Sanity Infinity Scarf Review & Shop Credit Giveaway

MKnits4Sanity Infinity Scarf Review Promo

As a life long Iowan, during the winter, I am always on the look out for a good scarf! In my opinion you can’t have too many scarves, they really are the perfect accessory.

Today, I am happy to be able to bring you a review of the perfect addition to any scarf collection.

My Thoughts

The multi-color wave crocheted infinity scarf from MKnits4Sanity is the ideal three seasons scarf.

Wrapped twice around the neck it provides a little warmth that would be right for blocking the chill in the Spring or Fall. Then, if you wrap it a third time it adds just the right amount of bulk to cover your whole neck for wear during the frigid Winter months.

The scarf is crocheted on the diagonal using Red Heart Boutique Treasure Yarn in Tapestry. This type of yarn is 70% acrylic and 30% wool, giving it a durable, yet soft feel. This also means the care of the scarf is very simple, just wash on cold and lay flat to dry. The Tapestry yarn has a variegated color palette, which includes deep purple, forest green, red, orange, and brown that naturally form stripes in the finished product.

Being a crocheter myself, I’d also like to point out that the tension in the yarn is perfect. The stitches are nice and even, making the width down the entire length of the scarf very uniform. The finishing is also nicely done with no loose ends hanging down to get caught in a loose zipper.

Overall, MKnits4Sanity has provided a beautiful, expertly scarf that I cannot wait to show off!

***MKnits4Sanity provided me, The Math Lovin’ Momma, with this infinity scarf, free of charge, for the purposes of review. The views expressed here are entirely my own. I only review products I would purchase for myself or my family.

An Open Letter to My Mother (Now That I’m a Mother)

Dear Mom,

When I was still in high school, I recall a conversation where you said something like, ‘Someday you’ll realize I do know what I’m talking about and you’ll even call to ask my advice.’ Well, that time has officially come. There have been other times in the past that I have thought back on this conversation; like when I had to call to ask how to make baked potatoes, or for the last ingredient in your famous Rio Grande hot dish. (Yes, I called it a hot dish. My husband is silently celebrating right now. Silly Minnesotans.)

Now that I’m a mother I see many things in a different light.

I finally understand why you wanted us to clean the house before leaving for the weekend. There are few things that give me more anxiety than knowing that there are dirty dishes in the sink or a bag of garbage that didn’t get taken out  when I’m trying to enjoy a few days away.

Folded clothes sitting in piles on the couch, or even in a clothes basket, make me crazy. (Even if I don’t have time to put them away…)

That load of laundry that has been washed 3 times because I keep forgetting to switch it over… Yes, I know I used to forget, or sometimes deliberately not, move a load of laundry when it was on my chore list. I now understand your frustration.

There are a few things I still haven’t figured out though.

For instance, how in the world did you have enough energy to clean the house after we went to bed? I know you must have, and probably more often that I even noticed in my self-absorbed, teenage world.  You had four children, I can’t even muster the energy to do that with one!

Also, how did you have time to make us clothes. I have been trying for 7 months to make a wet bag and a few diapers for Dragonling. Finally, this week I have been able to cut out the wet bag and the cover of one diaper. Nothing is put together, I haven’t even cut out all the pieces of the diaper yet.  I mean, you made us matching Christmas outfits. How in the world did you find time to do that?

How did you have time to make things for all the multitude of craft shows that we attended? I was there. I mean, I know how you did it, I just can’t even begin to understand how to find that amount of time for myself.

When did you sleep?! You did sleep, didn’t you?

I’m amazed at all the things you did that I didn’t even notice at the time.

The clothes you washed for me when I was too busy with school activities to make time to do it myself. The dinner that was always in the oven when I got home from play practice. The family movie and game nights. Letting my friends and I hang out in the basement TV room without so much as a complaint about how many showed up, the mess we made, or how loud we were.

Thank you for being my mother. Thank you for all the things I never thanked you for growing up. (I will never begin to be able to think of them all…) Thank you for continuing to be there and for offering advice and support when I need it now.

Thank you.

I love you, and I can’t wait to share more of my adventures as a mother with you.
